Why this book
Baby boomers, as they approach retirement age, have heard about the changing face of retirement. No longer will they be able to take their social security check, a modest company retirement plan and limited retirement savings and move down to Florida, spend their days golfing at private country clubs or fishing from their 40 foot cruiser, traveling to exotic places in the world for vacations, eating out every night (even if it is the discounted early bird specials) and living in a nice but modest house. For a few, this might be what their retirement looks like.
But many will decide, by choice, that this life is not for them. Others, who do not have sufficient financial resources, will out of necessity of getting by day-to-day have a different lifestyle. No matter what the reason is, many will have to find full-time or supplementary jobs or businesses to operate during their golden years. I call this change in the golden years, new-tirement.
You may have a current job that you really like that you can take with you into retirement, either through working part time, a portion of the year or as a consultant. If you really enjoy your work and are willing to continue, this will probably be your best opportunity to maximize your income and/or minimize your time devoted to work. The higher the skill level your work requires, the more experience required or the more complex the experience, the more this type of retirement will meet your financial goals.
But others will not be able to do this or will choose to move into a more enjoyable job or business, deciding to follow their dreams and not the money. For those of you who choose this path, this book is written to provide you some guidance and some reference material.
